There are 197 campsites in Auvergne. A superb green region in the Massif Central, it is the ideal holiday destination for hikers or simply anyone looking for the tranquility of an incredible natural landscape, composed of the famous volcanoes of the Chaîne des Volcans d'Auvergne, forests and magnificent waterfalls... We will help you to find a good campsite where you can rest comfortably after your long walks. Auvergne is divided into 4 departments and we will recommend a few campsites in each department.
In the Allier
In the north of Auvergne, the Allier is a pretty lush department, mixing bourbonnais groves (forests and woods), mountains (the Puy de Montocel is the highest point of the Allier) and pleasant rivers (the Gorges de la Sioule are very popular with white water sports lovers). There are more than 500 castles, Romanesque churches and beautiful residences, including the unmissable Château de la Palice and Bourbon-l'Archambault. The medieval town and the castle of Montluçon are representative of the ancient heritage of the Allier, celebrating it in various ways (festivals, medieval representations...) throughout the year... Above Montluçon and not far from the pretty village of Hérisson, you can settle down at the Domaine Maevag 3* campsite in Chazemais, equipped with a heated and covered swimming pool, games for children and offering various activities. If you are looking for the comfort of a top-of-the-range campsite, we have selected for you the campsite Le Beau Rivage 4*, in Bellerive-sur-Allier, closer to the spa town of Vichy, and offering beautiful services: indoor and heated swimming pool with slides, games for children, entertainment and especially direct access to a lake and a river. A few kilometres away, take a walk in the beautiful town of Moulins, prefecture of the department, and visit its superb cathedral. In Dompierre-sur-Bresbe, a nearby village, the animal amusement park Le PAL will please the whole family. 30 km from Vichy, in Ebreuil, we also recommend camping La Filature 4*, renting pleasant green and shaded sites on the banks of a river and organizing various activities for everyone.
In the Cantal
Department named after the Volcan du Cantal, Europe's largest volcano. Here too, you can visit a multitude of castles, Romanesque churches and medieval towns such as Saint-Flour or Murat, and near Saint-Flour, settle down at camping Le Petit Bois 3*, in Ruynes-en-Margeride, a green campsite built against the mountains and equipped with a large swimming pool. Lovely villages are also scattered in the countryside, but you will certainly discover the beautiful Aurillac, an abbey town decorated with superb 15th and 18th century facades, and its magnificent castle. at the end of August, you will attend the Aurillac street theatre festival, which attracts hundreds of curious people every year. To enjoy it, you will find in Saint-Martin-Valmeroux, 25 km away, camping Le Moulin du Teinturier 4*, a pretty campsite located in the heart of nature and on the banks of a river, offering pleasant fully equipped chalets for rent at the foot of the hiking trails. The Parc Naturel des Volcans d'Auvergne is a call to all possible and imaginable sports, the most practiced of which are hiking and mountain biking, allowing you to enjoy the superb landscapes, but also skiing in winter. Camping Domaine du Lac 3* borders Lac Saint-Etienne, in Saint-Gérons, and offers a swimming pool and entertainment for summer visitors. Count about 0€ per week camping in Cantal.
En Haute Loire.
La Haute-Loire is composed of forests occupying a third of its territory, giving it many famous hiking trails, such as the Sentiers de la Loire or the start of the pilgrimage path of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle, at Puy-en-Velay. This unmissable city in the region and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is full of wonder thanks to its ancient heritage, including its splendid cathedral on the summit of Mont Saint-Anis and the Saint-Michelin d'Aiguilhe chapel. Above Le Puy-en-Velay, we have spotted 2 campsites that will certainly not disappoint you: Camping de la Rochelambert 3*, in Saint-Geneys-près-Saint-Paulien, is a well-maintained green campsite, with a swimming pool and access to a river (the Allier gorges are nearby, a playground for white-water sports enthusiasts), and organizing activities.Camping Les Moulettes 3*, in Vorey, offers practically the same services, but it is equipped with a beautiful aquatic area with a slide. A multitude of villages are not to be overlooked, classified as the most beautiful villages in France (Arlempdes, Blesle, Lavaudieu, Pradelles), or housing the last thatched houses (Maudeyres and Bigorre). Finally, we recommend camping Au Bord de l'Eau Rock'n Camp 3*, located in Goudet, on the banks of the wild Loire, in the heart of nature and with a swimming pool and music area.
In Le Puy de Dôme.
Le Puy-de-Dôme is known for its superb chain of volcanoes (Auvergne volcanoes), which you can discover in detail in the Vulcania park, dedicated to this one. Nature is simply magical and bewitching, dotted with forests and vertiginous waterfalls, so pleasant to admire when walking or riding along the many hiking trails that criss-cross it. The winter sports resorts of Super Besse and Mont Dore, among others, are popular with winter sports enthusiasts. Near the ski resorts, you can comfortably stay at camping L'Europe 4*, in Murol, in which you will enjoy a beautiful aquatic area with a slide, entertainment and a children's club, as well as the proximity of Lake Chambon (10 minutes by foot).Another campsite by the lake, but this time offering cottage stays with a view of Lake Aydat, Au Camping et Chalets du Lac d'Aydat 3* will charm you with its surroundings and the many sports that can be practiced a stone's throw away (hiking, via-ferrata, mountain biking...) Visit Clermont-Ferrand, the region's flagship town, its Notre-Dame du Port church and its ancient monuments, as well as Issoire and its beautiful Saint-Austremoine Roman church. We advise you to choose Château La Grange Fort 3*, in Les Pradeaux, with a beautiful swimming pool on the terrace of its beautiful castle. You will also have access to a river, and to all the services worthy of a top-of-the-range (entertainment, restaurant...). Don't forget, however, that there are several villages to see in the Puy-de-Dôme, such as the pretty villages of Usson, Saint-Floret, La Bourboule...etc
